Why did you decide to study science?
I had an amazing science teacher in Year 8 that made me fall in love with chemistry. To my surprise, it kept getting more interesting as I progressed further in school. I also loved to conduct experiments, analyse data and solve problems so it was the perfect fit!
What made you choose Monash Uni in particular?
I went on a tertiary trip to all the Melbourne universities with my school, in year 11. I loved the feel and modern look of the Monash campus in comparison to all the others. They also offered the ‘Bachelor of Science Advanced – Research’ course which was perfect for me – all I wanted to study was science!
What's your favourite aspect of studying science?
I love going into the lab and not expecting the result of my chemical reaction. Figuring out why the reaction happened the way it did is extremely satisfying – especially when it has interesting applications.
What do you plan to do when you graduate?
I plan to continue my research in computational/physical chemistry by doing a PhD. I was not expecting to go this way at the beginning of my degree!
What has been the highlight of your science degree so far?
In my 3rd year I was selected to travel to Germany (for 5 weeks) to conduct a chemistry research project at Leipzig University. This counted as a normal unit and I completed it in the winter break between semester 1 and 2.
What's the biggest misconception you had about studying science before you started your course?
That all you can do by studying science is work in academia. There are so many soft skills that you develop by studying science (i.e. problem solving, critical thinking, written and verbal communication, team work etc.) that are highly desirable to any industry.
If you were to give some advice to someone who's thinking about studying at Monash Science, what would you say?
Do it! If you’re after brand new facilities, amazing lab programs and even better teachers, then Monash is where you’ll find it all.
