Monash physicists shine in 2025 ARC Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities scheme

Congratulations to Dr Mark Edmonds from Monash University’s School of Physics and Astronomy on securing $904,800 through the Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment, and Facilities (LIEF) scheme.
The ARC’s LIEF scheme supports pioneering research by providing critical infrastructure and high-quality equipment, reinforcing Australia’s global position in science and technology.
Dr Edmonds’ funding will support the establishment of the Victorian Facility for Atom-Scale Quantum Microscopy and Manufacturing, a cutting-edge initiative that aims to enable atomic-level analysis of quantum materials previously unavailable in Victoria.
This facility will focus on expanding knowledge in quantum and functional materials through advanced microscopy and electronic measurement techniques. The project is set to support and build capacity for world-leading research collaborations in fields such as topological materials, atomically thin materials, quantum matter, and magnetic materials.
In the latest LIEF funding round, the ARC awarded $38.3 million across various projects nationally, with Monash University receiving a total of $2,983,133 for two major initiatives. Alongside Dr Edmonds’ project, the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Sciences also received funding under the scheme.
In related developments, Professor Stefan Maier will serve as CI on the project “Laser Chemical Vapor Deposition Facility for Ultra-Thin Materials Writing”, with Professor Sumeet Walia from RMIT University as lead CI.
Additionally, Professor Csaba Balazs will participate in the LIEF-funded project “Cherenkov Telescope Array,” led by the University of Adelaide. This multinational initiative in gamma-ray astronomy aims to revolutionise our understanding of high-energy astrophysics and the mysteries of dark matter, with full operations anticipated by 2029.
And Professor Ulrik Egede will join the University of Adelaide’s LIEF project supporting Australia’s renowned experimental particle physics program, which seeks to unravel the fundamental workings of the universe.
