nanoIR2 uses pulses of a quantum cascade or an optical parametric oscillator laser for inducing a rapid thermal expansion which excite resonant oscillations of the AFM cantilever. The instrument is able to obtain AFM and IR maps simultaneously with a 20nm special resolution. Biological samples are normally mounted in typical CaF2 windows.

It allows for measurements of samples directly in the solid or liquid state. The instrument has a wavenumber resolution beginning with 2 cm− 1 and a spectral range of 20,000 to 200 cm− 1.
