For students and staff

Making sure you always feel safe is our top priority. That’s why we have a number of initiatives in place to make sure you’re safe at our campuses.

There’s an emergency number you can call if you ever need to, along with emergency help points at every campus so you can reach us if you don’t have a phone. We have a general security number too, where you can get advice, make a report or ask for a security escort.

Learn how to identify a scam

We’ve got security offices on all our campuses so you can get help when you need it. Drop by or call us at any time, day or night, seven days a week.

Security bus

Separate security buses run on the Caulfield and Clayton campuses, leaving about every 30 minutes from 5.30pm to 12.30am, seven nights a week. The buses don't run on University holidays. (This is a different service to the inter-campus shuttle bus.)

Our live bus tracker shows the current location of the security buses (see below). You can use our maps to find the bus routes and pick-up points (bus stops) – a mobile version of the pick-up point map is also available on the Monash bSafe app.

There are emergency help points (phones and intercoms) at every campus – just press the button or pick up the phone to talk to Security:

For your safety, our control room staff monitor security cameras, electronic access points, and intruder and emergency alarms on all our campuses.

The security cameras record images and recognise vehicle licence plate numbers, helping us prevent incidents and respond quickly.

Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, our security officers patrol campuses on foot and in cars to make sure your environment is safe and secure.

All security vehicles contain first aid kits and defibrillators that enable us to rapidly respond to a medical or cardiac emergency.

If you want a security officer to walk with you anywhere on campus, call the general security number (03 9902 7777) to arrange a safety escort.

More on security

Do you need to organise a security presence on campus, such as for a one-off or recurring event or activity? Uniformed security guards and crowd controllers must be organised through Security Services.
To arrange security staffing, email security@monash.edu with your University cost centre and fund.
Under our Access Control Procedure (pdf), approvals for access (and the issue of associated credentials, passes or keys) are coordinated through the relevant Access Coordinator for each University location. Generally, your Access Coordinator is the head of your unit or department.
Access coordinators can lodge a recommendation for access, or a request for changes to access, to security@monash.edu.
To ensure public safety, fixed and mobile surveillance devices operate 24/7 throughout the University’s campuses, including within the buildings and grounds. These include fixed CCTV cameras, number-plate recognition cameras, mobile CCTV vehicle patrols, and body-worn cameras that are worn by our security officers.
The installation and use of surveillance devices on our campuses occurs in accordance with the Surveillance Devices Act 1999 (Vic) and the University’s Surveillance Devices Procedure (pdf). Captured data is managed in accordance with the Data Protection and Privacy Procedure (pdf, 0.28 mb) and relevant Data Protection and Privacy Collection Statements.

You can use your M-Pass to identify yourself, access secure buildings, borrow books and other materials from the library, and pay for printing and photocopying. Check our M-Pass page for information on how to get an M-Pass, or replace a lost or stolen M-Pass.
