Vision
The vision for the 'Sport at Monash EDI Action Plan', is to create a network of thriving communities and environments that are equitable, diverse and inclusive.
The 'Sport at Monash EDI Action Plan' will endeavour to create safer, more welcoming, and empowered communities, where everybody feels they belong. We'll achieve this outlined vision:
- By addressing barriers to participation and retention in sport, through a rigorous change process,
- Deepening partnerships with Monash University stakeholders, and broader communities, and
- Enhancing facilities and programs, equitably.
Historically, Monash has actively engaged in promoting EDI through policies, programs, and community initiatives tailored to enhance inclusivity across all its campuses. The Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Framework 2022–2030 sets a comprehensive agenda, aiming for an intersectional, whole-of-institution approach that addresses the unique challenges and experiences of its diverse community members.
The broader contexts informing the Monash Sport EDI Enabling Plan encompass sector-wide initiatives, government directives, and community insights, highlighting a concerted effort to enhance equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) within higher education sporting services, programs and spaces.
Reports, including the Australian Universities Accord, emphasise the need for a more equitable and innovative systems, setting ambitious targets to increase participation among historically under-represented groups, which reflects a national push for greater inclusivity. Federal government initiatives, such as the National Plan to End Violence against Women and Children 2022-2032, mandate educational institutions to foster safer, more inclusive environments, providing a robust framework for EDI efforts.
This Monash Sport EDI Enabling Plan is not only about addressing these gaps but also about enhancing the positive actions already undertaken within the sporting, physical activity and recreational facilities, services and programs at Monash University. By implementing evidence-based intervention strategies, the university aims to reinforce a supportive and accessible environment that fosters inclusivity and safety.
Furthermore, the university is committed to expanding its education and training on EDI principles across all sports participants and administrators. This ongoing education initiative will build upon the existing positive culture within Monash’s sporting communities, promoting a deeper understanding of EDI principles.
This proactive approach not only addresses any existing gaps but also leverages and amplifies the positive actions already evident, ensuring a continuous and dynamic enhancement of inclusivity and safety. As the Plan progresses, the effectiveness of these initiatives will be analysed via objective feedback. This review process will ensure we continue to refine EDI practices, address identified gaps and explore emerging opportunities.
