Monash University Showcases Determination at 28th Annual Indigenous Nationals, Secures Top 10 Finish
From June 23 to 27, the University of Wollongong hosted the 28th annual Indigenous Nationals, welcoming hundreds of Indigenous student-athletes from across Australia. This event provided a week of intense competition and enriching cultural experiences across four sports.
Monash University proudly sent a team of 16 students from various faculties, all aiming for top honours.
The competition commenced with Monash facing Edith Cowan University, the University of Melbourne, and the University of Tasmania. Our team triumphed in all their pool matches and advanced to the quarterfinals, where they secured a victory against the University of Adelaide. This win led them to the semi-finals against the University of Sydney. In a thrilling match, Monash narrowly lost by one point, finishing third in basketball.
On the second day, Monash competed in netball against Adelaide University and Murdoch University. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to progress further after losing to Adelaide University.
The third day featured volleyball, where Monash excelled in their qualifying matches against the University of Wollongong, James Cook University, and Griffith University. However, they faced a narrow defeat by two points against the University of Sydney in the quarterfinals.
The final day saw Monash competing in touch football against QUT, James Cook University, and Murdoch University. The team won their first game against Murdoch University, lost to QUT, and drew with James Cook University. Despite their determination, the team did not progress further.
Overall, Monash University finished 10th in the competition, with the University of Newcastle emerging as the overall winner. Despite the challenges, the week was filled with sportsmanship and camaraderie, highlighting the spirit of the Indigenous Nationals.
