Master of Radiation Therapy
Discovering a career pathway in radiation therapy was Cate Davey’s “eureka moment”.
A trained architect, Cate had uncertainties about her profession but worked in the industry for six years and enjoyed making a contribution to people’s lives through her work in Indigenous and social housing. “From these professional experiences and my personal experiences as a maternity patient I realised that I would prefer a career with a strong care giving element.”
After touring two radiation therapy centres, Cate enrolled in our Master of Radiation Therapy. She chose Monash as “the accelerated program allowed me to embark on a career change with less impact on my life than a longer undergraduate course” and took into account her previous study and professional experience. As the subjects are delivered online, Cate is also able to balance her radiation therapy studies with work and family commitments.
Cate names the clinical placements at The Alfred and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre as highlights of her Monash experience. “Placements have enhanced my learning and provided context to the academic component of the course.” Along with developing the skills and knowledge required for a radiation therapist, Cate has also built an understanding of evidence-based practice and clinical research, which will allow her to contribute to improving radiation therapy treatments in the future.
While acknowledging the return to university has been a challenge, Cate reflects “I do not for one second regret the decision and encourage anyone contemplating a career change to take the plunge.”
