Bachelor of Medical Science / Doctor of Medicine
“My name is Christina Hyunjin Kim and I am a Canadian student studying at Monash. After completing my bachelor’s and master’s from the University of Toronto, I decided to make the shift to Australia to pursue the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine at Monash. I was especially drawn to the early hands-on experience and the patient interaction offered by Monash’s graduate entry program.
I completed my first placement at Box Hill Hospital. It was there that I observed two important skills that all doctors need: communication and decision-making. I observed first-hand, doctors connecting with patients, delivering bad news and making important treatment decisions on a daily basis. These skills truly make up the ‘art of medicine’.
Relocating from another country is never easy but my time here has made me a stronger person. I have no doubt that this experience will play an important role in shaping me into a tenacious and compassionate doctor. I have managed to make lifelong friends and even managed to continue my hobbies from back home. I started a choir group, called ‘The Ultrasounds’ composed of post-graduate medical students.
I know that once I complete my studies here, this will be a great stepping-stone to my dream of serving the underrepresented and underprivileged. I hope to one day become a general practitioner and be able to work in remote locations around the world.”
