R U OK? Day
Hey Sport, R U OK? R U OK? Day on Thursday 8 September encourages all of us to have regular, meaningful conversations to support anyone struggling with life’s ups and downs. This year our message is: Ask R U OK? No qualifications needed. Because a conversation could change a life. The earlier we genuinely ask, ‘Are you OK?’, the greater our chance of helping someone before they’re in crisis.
Monash Sport is proud to offer free opportunities to our Monash community this R U OK? Day (and all year round for that matter) to foster better physical and mental health.
Please visit our friendly Service Desk team on arrival to register for Monash Sport's R U OK? Day offers. Registration involves simply completing our Casual User form. *Subject to availability. For operating hours, click here.
For the Peninsula Focus Boxing class, please bring along boxing inners. Alternatively, these can be purchased at the service desk.
Benefits of exercise for your mental health
At Monash Sport, we are big believers in supporting mental health and wellbeing initiatives. In 2019, 97% of Monash students surveyed indicated that Monash Sport experiences helped to improve their mental health.
You already know how good exercise is for your physical health. But you might be surprised by how good exercise is for your mental health. Studies show that for treating mild-moderate depression, exercise can be as effective as talking therapy and medication. There are many ways that exercise positively influences your mental health: (Source: Beyond Blue)
- Promotes the release of feel-good chemicals in your brain, like endorphins and serotonin
- It helps you sleep better so you restfully at night and feel more energised during the day
- Gives you a sense of accomplishment as your fitness improves and you start achieving your goals
- Exercise is usually a shared activity with others so you get the added benefits of social connection
