Tell us about toursTell us about your research project?

I completed a Bachelor of Medical science and a Master of research with Western Sydney University. My Masters project was concerned with the human single-stranded DNA binding proteins (hSSBs) and their contributions to DNA repair mechanisms. Trying to figure out the structure of hSSB2 and its involvement in the repair of UV induced DNA lesions. While looking at hSSB1 and its binding specificity.

To develop an iPSC-derived cortical organoid with functioning neurons and cells from each of the major glial subtypes. This will improve our understanding of the development of the brain as well as the pathophysiologies of CNS disease. The model system can then be used to identify novel therapeutic targets for treatment of leukodystrophies.

What are you most proud of since starting your PhD?

I have only really just started my PhD journey so with that in mind i’m proud that i've been able to switch fields and learn new techniques. I'm starting to really get into the flow of information.

What is your favourite anatomical structure and why?

I would say the brain. It's a mass of different cells that is able to think about itself and learn about itself. It's just a crazy thing to think about.

What do you enjoy doing outside of your research?

I really enjoy teaching/tutoring. I love being able to help people understand things and have their aha moments. I also enjoy being outside running, hiking and walking.

What advice would you give to incoming PhD students in the Centre?

Everyone is happy to help you, just ask. If you need clarification or direction or anything, just ask.
