Professor Stephen Jane
Dean of the Sub-Faculty of Translational Medicine and Public Health
As Foundational Dean of the Sub-Faculty of Translational Medicine and Public Health, Professor Stephen Jane oversees the strategic leadership of the two schools based at The Alfred Hospital precinct: Central Clinical School and School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine.
Prior to this role, Stephen spent almost a decade as the Head of the Central Clinical School and the Director of Research for Alfred Health, and is a member of the Alfred’s clinical haematology service. He has also served as Acting Head of both the Clinical Haematology Division of The Alfred and the Australian Centre for Blood Diseases at Monash. His previous positions have included Director of the Bone Marrow Research Laboratories, Royal Melbourne Hospital Research Foundation, and research positions at the NIH National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (USA) and St Jude's Children's Research Hospital (USA).
Enhanced by his experience in clinical haematology, Stephen’s research interests encompass developmental and acquired disorders of the blood and skin. His work has been widely published, with 120 papers including articles in Science, Nature Medicine and Developmental Cell and he has been a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Haematology since 2001. Stephen’s research has been funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Wellcome Trust
A Monash alumnus, Stephen’s holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and a PhD in medicine. He is a fellow of both the Royal Australian College of Physicians and the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.
