A doctor’s journey: from Botswana to Australia
Dr Elvis Rapoo is now a Psychiatry Registrar at Sunshine Coast University Hospital in Queensland. This is far away from his home country of Botswana.
After receiving an academic scholarship in 2010 to study the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (Honours) degree, Dr Rapoo made the big decision to uproot and start his medical journey at Monash.
“It could not have been a better place to get me to where I am today”, reflects Dr Rapoo.
Whilst it wasn’t always easy, there were many memorable highlights in his study journey such as having the opportunity to gain hands on clinical experience at Monash Health and being able to learn and work alongside experts in the field.
“Being able to do placement under the supervision of experts such as Professor Michelle Leech will always stay fondly in my heart as I continue to become the best doctor I can be”.
Having graduated from Monash in 2016, his current work now focuses on Child, Youth and Adolescent Psychiatry in the acute inpatient setting within the hospital.
“I enjoy doing the work up and initial comprehensive assessments for children with disturbances of unknown origin. It becomes even more satisfying when we get to the bottom of what we’re investigating. It is always a great feeling when we see kids recover and reunite with their families.”
In 2018, Dr Rapoo was awarded the Ramsay Way award for being the most outstanding resident in the region.
