Dr Francois Fong, CEO, Founder and Medical Director of Neo-Health Group, attributes much of his professional success to his medical training at Monash University. When deciding where to undertake his studies, Monash was his top choice because he thought it was “a young and dynamic University”. Throughout his studies and internship, he greatly valued the hands on experience provided and his lecturers and supervisors’ clear passion for teaching.
Francois is a clinician specialising in sexual health, but also an accomplished researcher, enthusiastic community advocate for sex education in Hong Kong and a passionate educator. He is an advocate for lifelong learning, a value he hopes to instil in future doctors, medical researchers and counsellors to help them stay at the forefront of their fields.
After a number of years working in the Australian health sector, Francois decided it was time to take his knowledge and expertise back to Hong Kong where he detected the need for a comprehensive sexual health and preventative services facility. He went on to establish the first integrative sexual health centre in the area with medical practitioners, therapists, clinical psychologists and marriage counsellors.
The centre has recently evolved to develop its own laboratory service to provide highly efficient services that cover all aspects of sexual health. Francois says, “the analytical and laboratory skills I gained throughout my medical science degree combined with my medical practice skills have equipped me to not just look at the clinical side, but to also look at how we can inform biotech companies’ research and development”.
He prides himself on continuously evolving and innovating his centre to better service his community. Francois is currently working on developing and implementing a new health information system to better record and monitor patients’ treatment and progress. Commercialising this concept involves the application of valuable skills which he gained through his Health Informatics course at Monash.
If Francois could offer one piece of advice, it would be to “choose your career path wisely but not strictly, have an open mind and be prepared for opportunities that come your way, because finishing Medicine doesn’t mean you are just a doctor, you can become a medical innovator or entrepreneur. Your education at Monash will provide you with a global opportunity”.
