Tell us a bit about yourself
I started nursing in 2007, working as an orthopedic nurse until 2012.
After my second child, I completed postgraduate studies in urology/continence and was employed as a Continence Nurse Consultant and Clinical Urology Liaison Nurse.

From 2016-2018, I became a nurse practitioner candidate and completed a Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner) at Monash University, specializing in functional urological disorders. I then began nurse cystoscopy training in 2017 focusing on diagnostic cystoscopies and intravesical Botox and completed additional training to perform and interpret invasive urodynamic investigations.

Why did you choose to study your Nurse Practitioner qualification at Monash?
I chose to study at Monash because of the flexibility available through online learning. The staff were very supportive, and the course content was relevant and engaging.

Tell us about your current role as a Nurse Practitioner (NP)?
I’m currently working in both the public and private sectors as a urology nurse practitioner, and my studies enable me to practice at a higher clinical level. I work closely with local Urologists to ensure swift access to specialised health care. My role includes patient consultations (new and review assessments), pessary management, neuromodulation, performing urodynamic studies, cystoscopy lists (diagnostic and intravesical Botox), staff education, triaging referrals, and managing theatre lists and staff. My favourite aspect of working as a nurse practitioner is the autonomy to assess, diagnose and treat patients. Additionally, I hold a sessional teaching role at Monash University and work with Axonics Modulation Technologies.

What's your advice for an aspiring Nurse Practitioner?
Being a nurse practitioner is very rewarding and will open many doors for you.
NPs make a huge difference in patient’s experiences and access to health care particularly in regional communities. If you’re considering taking the leap I highly recommend it.
