Master of Health Services Management
"I’m a manager at a community rehab and an Occupational Therapist by background. I qualified in Ireland and moved out to Australia in 2007 for what should have been a year-long holiday but I never left!
I was always interested in what makes people tick and wanted to learn how to support my junior supervisees. Monash had a very good reputation with my workplace and the Master of Health Services Management was the most applicable course for me as a healthcare worker who wanted to build my management skills. I met people in this course that started on a similar path to me and became leaders, and they inspired me to consider more senior roles in addition to my clinical passions.
The research, presentation and time management skills I developed in the years I spent studying made me a well-rounded candidate for leadership roles. I used the knowledge developed at Monash to present at conferences and within my workplace. At the same time I secured a grant from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to investigate leadership within allied health and present at workshops to other health networks. These experience have raised my profile and benefited me enormously personally and professionally since.
In the next five years, I’d like to still be in a managerial role but perhaps in a different area of health. I want to be able to contribute to the ongoing innovation of public health and support my director and executives in developing and expanding the service to better meet the needs of our community. I’d also like to support some of the aspiring leaders in my organisation and help them along their leadership journey."
