Bachelor of Biomedical Science
Sushweta Pal completed a Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Monash and is now well on track to becoming an Optometrist, currently completing a Doctor of Optometry course.
It was the strong focus on research and hands on learning that attracted her to the Bachelor of Biomedical Science degree at Monash.
“From a young age I knew I wanted to be involved in the healthcare sector, however I was unsure what I specifically wanted to do. I chose to study the Bachelor of Biomedical Science as I felt it would give me a good foundation and exposure to different career paths within the health sector,” she said.
Due to the diversity of the degree, Sushweta now has a strong foundation and background in a number of diseases. “This has really supplemented my current degree, especially when I’ve seen patients with systemic and ocular conditions co-existing.”
“I enjoyed how both lectures and tutorials within the degree used up-to-date examples of current research, as it showed how applicable our knowledge was,” she said.
“We were exposed to unique areas of Biomedical Science such as Bioinformatics and public health, which highlighted the diversity of healthcare and possible avenues we could pursue following the completion of our degree.”
“I enjoyed the ongoing support we received from the staff, our peers through various mentoring programs and the Biomedical Science Student Society, as well as the strong focus on research and critical appraisal of current literature which has taught me lifelong skills that I still use today.”
During her time at Monash, Sushweta completed the invitational elective ‘Global Research and Advanced Research’ which involved working in interdisciplinary teams to write a research proposal and apply for external funding.
Sushweta’s team was successful and had the opportunity to complete fieldwork at Kyushu University in Japan. “This was an amazing experience as it combined both my passions in scientific research and travel,” she said.
Her advice for anyone considering studying Biomedical Science at Monash is, “if you’re interested in pursuing a career in healthcare but are unsure of what exactly you want to do, this degree gives you great exposure and insight into various exciting career pathways”.
