Vale Associate Professor Ian ‘Cas’ McInnes OAM
Tribute
Associate Professor Ian ‘Cas’ McInnes OAM, who died peacefully in Melbourne in his 93rd year, was a highly respected surgeon, with particular interests in breast, oesophageal, liver, and portal hypertension surgery.
Head of the Surgery Unit at The Alfred in the early 1980s, he also served as Clinical Dean at Monash Central Clinical School and was appointed an AM for his service to medical surgery in 2013. He was a valued and respected staff member.
As well as being an excellent clinician and highly skilled surgeon, he made key contributions as a surgical leader, educator, clinical researcher, and administrator. He was most importantly an outstanding role model, friend, and mentor to generations of Alfred surgeons.
Remembered by Frankston Hospital as one of their initial six General Surgeons, supporting the local community with a continuous on-call roster in the 1970s onwards, the McInnes lecture theatre is named after him in the postgraduate education centre.
In retirement, Associate Professor McInnes remained active and continued part time consulting and medico-legal work for medical defence associations for many years.
He was a keen golfer, and MCC member and enjoyed AFL, regularly attending Grand finals.
The Monash Medical, Nursing and Health Sciences faculty offer its deepest condolences to Ian’s wife Ann, sons Robert, Simon and family.
