Lancet seminar to increase global awareness of a rare inflammatory disease
Behçet's syndrome is a systemic vasculitis (i.e vessel inflammation), potentially affecting all the organs of our body. New treatments are available for this rare condition, essentially based on anti-inflammatory drugs and immunosuppressants. The prevalence of the disease varies across countries, but generally speaking, being a rare disease, it affects by definition less than 5 in 10.000 people.
The Lancet Seminar published Online on February 22, 2024, provides an up-to-date, balanced, and complete description of Behçet's syndrome, with the potential of increasing awareness of this rare inflammatory disease, not only among experts, but also to a more general audience.
Lead author Dr Giacomo Emmi from the Centre for Inflammatory Diseases, in collaboration with Dr Alessandra Bettiol and Prof Domenico Prisco, Department of Experimental and Clinical Medicine, University of Florence, Italy, and Prof Gulen Hatemi, Istanbul University Cerrahpasa Medical School, Turkey has described the main basic and clinical traits of Behçet's syndrome.
Dr Emmi said, "This seminar is to raise awareness of Behçet's syndrome in the general population and different stakeholders (e.g. healthcare institutions, pharma companies".
