Sunraysia Collaboration Medical Muster unites medical students across the tri-state region

Sunraysia Collabpration Medical Muster 2025

Medical students from three interstate universities will come together in Broken Hill from 15-17 September for the annual Sunraysia Collaboration Medical Muster—a vibrant program designed to foster community, collaboration, cultural awareness and clinical skill development among rurally-based students.

Established as part of the Sunraysia Collaboration, the event is a joint effort between the Broken Hill University Department of Rural Health (BHUDRH) and Monash Rural Health. It forms part of the broader Tri-State Student Muster, which brings together students from Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia to experience the unique offerings of the Sunraysia region.

Over several days, students participate in a rich program of activities including a town centre tour, a visit to the iconic Line of Lode Memorial, a guided tour of BHUDRH, a student networking evening, an excursion to Silverton, and a behind-the-scenes look at the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).

“This year’s Medical Muster is offering 13 Monash final-year students a rare chance to connect across borders, deepen their understanding of rural practice, and build lasting professional relationships. These activities not only enhance clinical confidence, but also instil a strong sense of community and purpose—qualities that are vital for future rural health leaders”, says Kendall Livingstone, Regional Manager at Monash Rural Health Mildura.

The Sunraysia Collaboration continues to play a pivotal role in strengthening ties between institutions and communities across the tri-state region.

“This partnership reflects our shared commitment to nurturing the next generation of rural doctors. By bringing students together in Broken Hill, we’re creating a space where learning is grounded in local culture, collaboration and real-world experience. It’s a powerful model for rural health education”, reflects Dr Aliza Lord, Medicine Lead at University Department of Rural Health - Broken Hill.

As the Muster wraps up, students leave not only with sharpened clinical skills, but with a deeper appreciation for the communities they’ll one day serve.
