Master of Health Services Management
A leap of faith took Deon Brink from mining into the healthcare industry.
Starting out as a mine environmental control official in his native South Africa, Deon got his first glimpse into the world of emergency medical care as part of the mines rescue brigade. “I took a leap of faith, applied to university, and got accepted to study to become an advanced life support paramedic.” After qualifying at the top of his class, Deon worked in a range of pre-hospital settings including a paramedic manager, medical cover on a seismic ship, and for the last decade, various training and leadership roles with St John Ambulance Western Australia. He also holds current leadership and research positions with Advanced Paediatric Life Support Australia and Curtin University.
Keen to expand his horizons, Deon sought out a postgraduate qualification that “would not only benefit me when done, but while I was studying.” Taught by leaders in health care management and policy, Monash’s Master of Health Services Management ticked a lot of boxes. Deon is already reaping the benefits of the course with a recent workplace promotion to General Manager – Clinical Services, he comments “I was able to apply my learnings from day one and it’s allowed me to interact more meaningfully with other health care professionals and administrators.”
Working towards an executive position with St John Ambulance, Deon hopes to "continue to have a positive impact on patient care and service delivery to the people of Western Australia." He encourages other health professionals to consider the Master of Health Services Management: “Regardless of what your chosen health care direction is, it will provide you with the tools to further your career in the future.”
