Bachelor of Nutrition Science
A self-confessed “jack of all trades, master of none” Nick McPhate has funnelled his interests in food and health science into studying nutrition and dietetics.
“What really attracted me to the Bachelor of Nutrition Science at Monash was the pathways to future clinical opportunities and the Master’s program after graduation.” At Monash, Nick became part of our nutrition community, learning alongside students who shared his passions and benefiting from close relationships with our lecturers and staff. He completed a placement with Associate Professor David Kannar, working towards developing a low GI, nutrient dense sugar product. Of this experience, Nick reflects “As many students, myself included, study this course with the long-term goal of becoming a dietitian, this opened my eyes to another whole world that the nutrition science degree can prepare you for. The immersion within a professional setting, working to deadlines and interaction with food industry and marketing professionals all contributed to a valuable learning experience.”
Throughout his studies, Nick used his nutrition and health knowledge to positively impact the community. He has worked with his local council in a ‘blokes in the kitchen’ program, teaching basic cooking skills. “I found the experience very eye opening as it was one of my first practical experiences using the knowledge I gained in the degree. It was quite empowering at the same time as I was able to navigate most of the questions that the men had for me.” Nick also travelled to Thailand as part of a health-promotion volunteering program.
Having finished his Bachelor of Nutrition Science in 2015, Nick is now completing his Master of Dietetics at Monash, with the goal to practice clinically as an accredited dietitian.
