Bachelor of Biomedical Science

Biomedical Science student Rachel Howard has truly thrown herself into every opportunity Monash has to offer – both locally and abroad.

When she came to Monash, Rachel didn’t know a soul. Living at one of the halls of residence, she quickly got involved in all that campus life offered. Among other activities, she is a resident advisor in Campbell Hall, peer tutor for first-year chemistry, and biomed leader in the Student Leader Ambassador Program.

Rachel’s sights were also set on overseas adventures. She seized study abroad opportunities, undertaking a summer program at Yale University in bioethics and Italian language study at the Monash Prato campus. Both have provided her with life-time memories and rich learning experiences.

“In Italy we were encouraged to explore Italy and learn language through immersion. The Yale program unites students from more than 30 countries, and varied disciplines, so it was an amazing learning experience.”

Rachel credits her overseas experiences, particularly the Yale program, with profoundly shaping her perspective on medical practice – both now and into the future.

“My experiences studying abroad have provided me with an exquisite knowledge and understanding of different cultures and the importance of diversity. Particularly, my study of bioethics at Yale has given me a framework for medical practice that will remain with me forever.”

One of the highlights of Rachel’s time at Yale was the opportunity to shadow medical specialists at Yale Hospital.

“I was able to follow around an emergency department specialist, an ophthalmologist, a fertility specialist as well as tour the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

“The NICU, in particular, was one of the most amazing yet humbling opportunities I've ever had in my life.”

Rachel is hoping to study graduate medicine next year.
