Bachelor of Biomedical Science
A few years ago, Raymond Zhang set himself on the path to become a doctor or medical researcher and a critical step was studying the Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Monash. “I chose Biomedical Science, which kept medicine and research options open, while letting me glimpse into the career outcomes of both.” With a keen interest in biology and medicine, he says the exclusive opportunity to gain entry to Monash’s MD program was what sold him the course.
A special encounter with a terminally ill patient helped confirm Raymond’s passion in medical research. “During one of my earliest shifts as a volunteer in palliative care, I met a patient who refused treatment for brain cancer after its sixth recurrence. From that encounter, I developed a more powerful drive to become a medical researcher.” Raymond says this experience prompted him to do some immediate searching for intern and studentship positions. “After a string of emails, interviews and an in-depth application process, I was offered the Hudson Institute's summer studentship program.”
As a first year student, Raymond’s involvement with the Hudson Institute proved to be an enlightening experience. The program is generally restricted to second-year students. “There was a myriad of lab work I witnessed during my studentship, but the most interesting thing I learnt was the way in which the research apparatus operates in the larger context.” Notably, Raymond learnt how research projects are conceived, funded, carried out, reviewed, and published.
Looking forward, Raymond hopes to use his Biomedical Science degree and experience from the Hudson Institute studentship to complete his Honour’s and PhD in medical research.
