Master of Advanced Clinical Midwifery Practice

A decade ago, Relle McMillin was a successful banking professional. After the birth of her children had a profound effect on her, she decided to make a dramatic career change and become a midwife. With doula (birth companion) training under her belt, Relle then completed her midwifery degree at our Peninsula campus, where she found the lecturers, staff and placement structure to be “supportive and family-friendly.”

Relle is now a registered midwife in a public hospital and qualified childbirth educator, and she says her driving force is “to educate and encourage women and their support team to view the birth of their baby as a normal.”  Dedicated to improving her profession, Relle is also currently completing a Master of Advanced Clinical Midwifery Practice. When making the decision to start her postgraduate midwifery education, she says “I didn’t have a second thought as to where I wanted to do further study, but Monash.” Having now completed the first year of her Master’s, Relle loves being able to relate what she is studying directly to her current workplace.

Keeping her career options in education and research open Relle’s long-term plan is to work towards a role which will enable her to participate in the overall future of midwifery. She hopes to one day mentor student midwives or publish research that will “improve outcomes and experiences for childbearing women.”
