Sara Fung Shu Kwan is passionate about improving the university experience for her fellow international students. Whether it’s practising conversational English, advocating for student welfare or helping run orientation activities, she’s there to help out.
In 2017, Sara moved from Hong Kong to Melbourne to study a Bachelor of Nursing at our Clayton campus. Monash’s international reputation for nursing excellence, supportive teaching staff and diverse community all appealed to her when making this important decision.
“Monash University is a good place to study, inclusive and multicultural and with lots of support around, especially for international students.”
For Sara, the highlight of her nursing degree has been the clinical placement opportunities. As part of the Monash Fellowship program, she’s completing the majority of her placements within the sites of Victoria’s largest public health service, Monash Health.
“I love doing placements as I can practise all the skills that I’ve learnt in the clinical lab and learn how to interact with patients and their family members.”
Other than Melbourne’s unpredictable weather, Sara loved relocating from Hong Kong to Australia. In only two years, she’s thrown herself into the Monash’s thriving community. Sara is an international orientation assistant and a Let’s Chat conversation facilitator at English Connect, our English language skills program. She’s also active within the nursing student community as a peer mentor and international welfare representative.
Sara hopes to bring her multicultural interests into her future career as a nurse and go onto further study in mental health or palliative care.
“I’d like to break through some of the cultural barriers and hopefully help patients open up more.”
