Lightboard Studios team wins AFR Education Award

The AFR described the Lightboard Studios entry as a standout winner in the Education Technology category.

Congratulations to the Lightboard Studios team – a collaboration between Monash and La Trobe universities - which has won the Australian Financial Review (AFR) Higher Education Awards 2020 in the category for ‘Education Technology’.

The AFR Higher Education Awards are a special yearly event dedicated to recognising the remarkable contributions that tertiary institutions make to the Australian community. The AFR described the Lightboard Studios entry as a standout winner in the Education Technology category.

The judges said “the visual output had a clarity that was hard to believe and took the ancient concept of chalk and a board and sent it light years into the future.”

The Monash Lightboard, hosted in the School of Physics and Astronomy, lets Science academics prepare last-minute teaching videos, with the critical elements of live inking, eye contact and quality audio which are often missing from laptop-recorded screencasts.

Since Monash jumped to online-only mode in March due the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 1000 videos have been recorded in the Lightboard Studio.

When the campus closed, the lightboard stayed open.

In the lead-up to the Clayton campus closure earlier this year, the Lightboard team reconfigured the lightboard as a non-contact studio. It can record a teaching video, play it back, and add multimedia overlays, without touching any surfaces in the studio.

The Monash Lightboard was built by engineering graduate Josh Morris, education research fellow Dr Phil Starkey, and academics Dr Russell Anderson (now at La Trobe University) and Dr Lincoln Turner, with funding from the School of Physics and Astronomy, the Faculty of Science, and the Monash Education Academy. The project is supported by Science Education Design and enabled by Scientific Imaging Services, eSolutions and the Monash Instrumentation Facility.

Monash University also won an AFR Award in the International Education Category for its Global Immersion Guarantee program which offers a free trip to one of its international campuses to all students who have completed the first year of a Bachelor of Arts degree.
