Breaking the stigma around mental health in medicine

The Gippsland Regional Training Hub recently welcomed Latrobe Regional Health and Monash Rural Health staff and students to an inspiring Crazy Socks 4 Docs Day event.

Crazy Socks 4 Docs Day, an initiative designed to challenge the stigma surrounding mental health in the medical profession, encourages conversations about the challenges healthcare professionals face in balancing their well-being with the demands of their work. Attendees proudly sported their most vibrant and eccentric socks or received a pair on-site, symbolising solidarity and support for mental health advocacy.

In addition to the colorful display, attendees engaged in a compelling session led by Dr Patrick Johnson from the Victorian Doctors Health Program. The presentation covered some of the key issues doctors and students often struggle with and delved into strategies for maintaining mental health and fostering resilience within the medical profession.

"Supporting mental health in the medical profession is critical. Events like Crazy Socks 4 Docs Day help create the opportunity for doctors and students to discuss their challenges, reducing stigma and encouraging help-seeking behaviors. Mental well-being should be a priority, not a secondary concern”, he said.

Reflecting on the impact of such events, Associate Professor Robert Dawson, Director of the Gippsland Regional Training Hub said "medical professionals face immense pressures, and initiatives like Crazy Socks 4 Docs Day play an important role in fostering a culture of support and awareness. By bringing together healthcare staff and students, we reinforce the message that no one is alone in their mental health journey.”
