Health and Safety Representative (HSR) training
HSRs are entitled to initial and refresher training in accordance with section 67 of the OHS Act 2004.
Initial training consists of a five-day WorkSafe-approved training course, HSRs can choose the course and provider in consultation with their employer.
Refresher training happens once a year and is also WorkSafe-approved. HSRs are encouraged to do the refresher training every year.
Employers must:
- allow HSRs to attend training within 3 months of them requesting it
- pay the training course fees and any reasonable associated costs.
What does the training cover?
The training course typically covers:
- the OHS legislative framework
- the roles and responsibilities of HSRs
- how to consult and resolve issues
- Provisional Improvement Notices (PINs)
- how to stop unsafe work.
