Your role as a First Aider

As a First Aider, you have important responsibilities and access to support. Your organisational unit is responsible for funding your training, personal protective equipment and immunisation.

As a First Aider, you need to:

  • respond promptly to injuries and illnesses, working within your level of competence
  • check SOS bracelets or similar items when attending to casualties
  • arrange appropriate referrals when needed
  • keep all information confidential – only release medical information to medical staff
  • record all treatment on the First Aid Online Report Form, even minor incidents
  • encourage injured staff to submit a hazard and incident report through Safety and Risk Analysis Hub (SARAH)
  • attend all required training
  • maintain first aid facilities and restock kits when needed
  • become and remain familiar with your work area's procedures
  • use good hygiene practices (as outlined on the Victorian Department of Health website)
  • exercise standard precautions to minimise exposure to blood and body fluids
  • report any issues you encounter in your role to your first aid coordinator.

Recording and reporting injuries

You need to record all treatment on the First Aid Online Report Form – even minor incidents.

Serious incidents

If a serious incident occurs (e.g. a fracture, serious cut, amputation, electric shock), notify Health Safety & Wellbeing (HSW) as soon as possible. Unless leaving the area undisturbed will pose an immediate risk to yourself or others, the area where the incident occurred should be left as-is for further investigation later.

Encouraging incident reporting

Once the injured person is well enough, encourage them to complete a hazard and incident report through SARAH.

Hygiene and infection control

You need to use good hygiene practices and standard precautions to minimise your exposure to blood and body fluids. All first aid kits are equipped with safety gloves. Assume all blood and body fluids are potentially infectious.

Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation

You decide whether to give direct mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. If you do, use an individual resuscitation mask – they're in every first aid kit.
