Safe work instructions

Safe Work Instructions (SWIs) are written instructions that identify health and safety issues for machinery, equipment, tasks or processes.

Your SWIs should identify:

  • steps that pose risk
  • control measures built into these tasks
  • training or qualifications required to do the task
  • personal protective equipment required
  • actions to reduce risk when doing the task.

SWIs don’t replace training requirements. Instead, you can use them to supplement or guide training, and to remind staff and students about operating procedures and controls.
