Local work area induction

If you’re a manager or supervisor, it’s your responsibility to make sure commencing staff, contractors, visitors and honours or graduate students are guided through any required local area HSW inductions.

Most new starters need to complete an induction within four weeks of commencing work at a Monash University location, to make sure they’re aware of:

  • their HSW responsibilities
  • key safety and emergency procedures for their area (including any hazards)
  • relevant HSW policies and documents.

Just note, the kind of induction you need to complete depends on the nature and location of the work you’re completing. For example, a technician engaged to fix a piece of lab equipment may be required to complete an induction, however, a guest lecturer who is accompanied at all times may not need one. Check the OHS contractor management procedure to see what’s required.

Induction checklists

You’ll need to take your new starter through one or more of the induction checklists (depending on their role and working environment).

Think of these checklists as a starting point, outlining the minimum safety information for different roles and work environments. Every area is different – so it’s a good idea to think about any additional information you may need to add to your induction plan.

Once you’ve completed the induction checklist, keep a record of the signed checklist accessible in your local files.
