Ergonomic task chairs

When you're choosing an ergonomic task chair for office work, you need to know what features to look for. We recommend specific chairs that meet ergonomic standards.

If you're choosing chairs for an office redesign or refit, contact the Project Manager overseeing the work.

What you need to know before purchasing

You need to purchase all new chairs from the University's approved suppliers in Coupa. Chairs must:

  • meet Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 4438:1997 for height-adjustable swivel chairs
  • have Australasian Furnishing Research and Development Institute (AFRDI) Level 6 certification.

We recommend chairs with moulded foam seats and backrests in most cases, although you may prefer a mesh chair.

What makes a good ergonomic chair

A good ergonomic chair is easy to adjust and supports your lower to mid-back. Here's what to look for:

Essential features

Your chair needs:

  • a five-star base for stability
  • easy seat height adjustment from a seated position
  • a curved front seat edge to reduce pressure on your thighs
  • a seat back that can tilt slightly backwards or forwards
  • a backrest that adjusts in height and angle with positive lumbar support
  • breathable fabric on the seat and backrest – vinyl is generally not suitable.

Recommended features

Look for these features if possible:

  • an adjustable seat pan that slides forwards and backwards
  • a high-back design for shoulder support – suitable for 90–95% of people.

Backrest options

Backrests come in square or rounded designs. This is personal preference, but square backs can suit wider shoulder frames better.

Armrests

Armrests are optional but can reduce strain on your shoulders and back when you're resting from typing. If you want armrests, they need to:

  • adjust in height
  • not stop the chair from fitting under your desk.

Castors and glides

Choose the right wheel type for your floor:

  • standard swivel castors for carpet
  • low-glide rubber castors or glides for hard floors like tiles, timber or vinyl.
