Defibrillators

If someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally, call Emergency Services (000) and then Monash Security (333 or 03 9905 3333) immediately. Start CPR if it’s safe to do so, and continue CPR while using a defibrillator.

Accessing and using a defibrillator

  1. Call Monash Security – their vehicles carry portable defibrillators and Security staff are first-aid trained to assist.
  2. Alternatively, a trained First Aider can use a defibrillator from one of the locations listed below.
  3. If no trained staff are available, anyone can use a defibrillator by switching it on and following the voice prompts. Defibrillators are designed to be simple and safe for anyone to use in an emergency.

Checklists

Defibrillator maintenance ensures that the devices are always ready for use in an emergency. Maintenance includes checking the:

  • life of the battery
  • pads
  • overall functionality.

Post-use checklists are completed after a defibrillator has been used, to confirm that it’s been cleaned, restocked, and is operational for future use.

Monthly maintenance

The HSW Cyclic Events Checklist stipulates monthly checks of every defibrillator, and requires that logs are kept, comprising the previous six months’ worth of checklists. An archive of all prior checklists should also be retained.

Completed maintenance checklists that must be stored locally:

After use

Completed post-use checklists must be sent to Health, Safety & Wellbeing at hsw@monash.edu.
