Building Wardens
Role and responsibilities
The Building Warden is the head of the Emergency Control Organisation (ECO) within buildings. In the event of an emergency the Building Warden will determine and initiate the appropriate emergency response prior to the arrival of emergency services on site.
In the event that the Building warden is absent, the Deputy Building Warden will fulfill their duties.
Appointment
Building Wardens are appointed by Heads of Academic and Business Units, who make sure the person appointed to the role:
- has their delegated authority
- is provided with time to complete all required training, and
- is provided with sufficient resources and time for their appointed role.
Deputy Building Wardens may also be appointed to share the responsibilities of the role and to act in the role in the absence of the Building Warden.
Key areas of focus
Building Wardens:
- collaborate with management and ECO members on the implementation of emergency plans and procedures.
- advise management with developing Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEP) (docx) for their staff as required.
Building Wardens:
- provide Floor Wardens with a Building Emergency Induction (docx)
- communicate PEEPs to Floor Wardens
- communicate planned drills to ECO
- brief Emergency Services
- consolidate and provide feedback to post drill debrief sessions and complete a Building Evacuation Record in SARAH
- communicate completion and outcomes of drills to the Safety Officer for recording (cyclic tasks) and to the HSW Committee Chair during quarterly meetings.
Building Wardens:
- monitor Floor Warden coverage and training
- monitor completion of the required number of drills
- assist Safety Officers with the Emergency Management section of the OHSMS self-assessment and update management on the level of local implementation and opportunities for improvement.
