First Aiders
Role and responsibilities
First Aiders provide first aid as needed, always working within their level of competence, and record all treatment (however minor) on the First Aid Injury Report. They are delegated responsibility by their Head of Unit to be readily available when required to provide First Aid assistance.
First Aiders have a responsibility to ensure they keep up to date with annual CPR refresher training and level two first aid training every three years.
Appointment
First Aiders are appointed by Heads of Units who ensure the person appointed to the role:
- has their delegated authority
- is provided with time to complete all required training, and
- is provided with sufficient resources and time for their appointed role.
Key areas of focus
First Aiders assist Building Wardens and management with the development of Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEP) (docx) if required.
First Aiders:
- communicate relevant information from HSW to everyone in their area
- report any deficiencies in first aid equipment, facilities, or services to their First Aid Coordinator
- keep information on casualties confidential (apart from reporting requirements and giving relevant information to medical staff)
- encourage injured people to complete an incident report in SARAH
- arrange prompt and appropriate referral to medical assistance when needed.
First Aiders monitor training compliance and refresh it as required.
