Gippsland doctors take part in Teaching on the Run

Doctors from across Gippsland have been able to improve their teaching skills and confidence by participating in the Teaching on the Run program, delivered locally by Monash Rural Health.

Administered by the TELL Centre, the Teaching on the Run program is a nationally recognised medical education program, designed to improve the practical skills, knowledge and confidence of doctors as clinical teachers, supervisors and assessors in the workplace.

Associate Professor Cathy Haigh, Director of Monash Rural Health Gippsland co-delivered the training with Associate Professor Bruce Waxman, Clinical Dean at Monash Rural Health Wonthaggi and Clinical Lead of Accreditation at the Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria.

“Teaching is a routine part of clinical practice, with doctors expected to teach their junior colleagues or medical students on placement, ” explains Associate Professor Haigh.

“Many doctors love teaching and people often teach the way they were taught. This program provides an opportunity for our doctors to reflect on their teaching style, learn from each other and get up-to-date with the latest practices in medical education.”

Gippsland doctors in Teaching on the Run training provided by Monash Rural HealthRun over two days, the workshop covered six modules across learning, teaching and assessment and has a strong focus on understanding the learner’s perspective in the teaching process.

“Teaching on the Run gives doctors the opportunity to step back and think about what the key components are - for example in teaching a clinical skill - and what the learner needs to know. By deconstructing a skill, this reduces the cognitive load for the learner and gives them the opportunity to learn and practice skills in a safely supervised environment.”

Participation in the Teaching on the Run program was sponsored by the Gippsland Regional Training Hub, who facilitate a range of training and career development opportunities for doctors across the region. Monash Rural Health Gippsland and the Gippsland Regional Training Hub hope to run additional sessions of Teaching on the Run in the future, to support more doctors across Gippsland.

“We want to help nurture a good, positive teaching culture and continue to attract more doctors to Gippsland,” said Associate Professor Haigh.
