Associate Professor Hieu Pham addressing the group on 8 JulyAssociate Professor Pham has worked with Mildura Base Public Hospital and Monash Rural Health Mildura for more than a decade, as a senior lecturer, consultant psychiatrist and psychogeriatrician and in 2020 settled permanently in the region. He currently oversees postgraduate psychiatry training at Mildura Base Public Hospital.

The appointment was celebrated with lunch at Trentham Estate on Friday 8 July and attended by Monash Rural Health staff and supporters from around the Mildura community, including local health services.

Professor Shane Bullock, Head of School at Monash Rural Health, welcomed Associate Professor Pham in his new role as Deputy Director.

“Hieu has a long-standing commitment to rural medical education and workforce development. His experience and strong links with local health services and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatry will benefit medical students and trainee doctors in the region.”

Associate Professor Janelle Brennan, Director of the North West Victorian Regional Training Hub, noted the importance of the appointment for the Mildura community.

“Hieu has a demonstrated track record in developing rural pathways for medical training, including establishing the first end-to-end regional psychiatry program in Mildura. His appointment will enable the North West Victorian Regional Training Hub to build on our current program of work designed to help doctors live, work and train rurally. Together, we look forward to working with the local health services, medical colleges, government and other stakeholders to help attract and retain doctors in Mildura and across the north west.”

The North West Victorian Regional Training Hub provides training opportunities and support for medical students and junior doctors in the region. The Hub’s footprint extends from Mildura to Swan Hill, Cohuna and Kerang, down past Bendigo to Gisborne, Kyneton, Castlemaine and Maryborough.

Over the last twelve months, the North West Victorian Regional Training Hub has:

  • Provided bursaries to 22 junior doctors in the Loddon Mallee to take part in professional development and training to enhance their medical careers.
  • Sponsored 30+ Loddon Mallee doctors to complete stage one of the Monash Rural Health clinical teaching and education pathway to strengthen their clinical teaching skills.
  • Hosted the inaugural Doctors for Regional Innovation Vision Excellence Research and Scholarship (DRIVERS) conference, featuring presentations from 35+ regional doctors and medical students across Victoria.

Mildura and north west Victoria are increasingly becoming a destination of choice for medical students and junior doctors for their education and further training.

“It's also an amazing place to live and work and in my new role I intend to encourage as many new and existing doctors to come to the region to practise and to conduct further study”, said Associate Professor Pham.Attendees at lunch for Associate Professor Hieu Pham - Marcus Guthrie, Associate Professor Fiona Wright, Professor Shane Bullock, Associate Professor Janelle Brennan, Associate Professor Hieu Pham, Terry Welch and Cr Mark Eckel
