Strengthening supervisory skills in Swan Hill
Twelve doctors from Swan Hill District Health had the opportunity to extend their clinical teaching skills as part of a Clinical Teaching and Education Pathway, developed by Monash Rural Health.
Over a half-day workshop delivered by the North West Victoria Regional Training Hub, participants were introduced to the key principles of learning and teaching, communication and feedback for clinical educators.
According to Director of Medical Services, Dr Rex Prabhu, having this training on offer in Swan Hill will help increase the teaching and supervisory capabilities of the local medical workforce. Doctors at Swan Hill District Health currently supervise medical students from both Monash University and Charles Sturt University on clinical placements, as well as trainees through the Victorian Rural Generalist program.
“This greatly assisted our supervisors standardise their approach to current pedagogy and understanding the diversity in learning among medical students – Lisa was brilliant and inspired our educators, they were yearning for more.”
Dr Lisa Hall, a Senior Lecturer in Education and Evaluation, from Monash Rural Health delivered the workshop and noted participants were excited to put their learning into practice.
“It was wonderful to have such enthusiasm from the Swan Hill medical community, and I hope that some will go on to participate in the next stage of the pathway in 2024 to further build on their new skills. We know that quality teaching and supervision helps build a strong local medical workforce. This program provides an important professional development opportunity for regional doctors and recognises how important teaching is to medicine.”
Over 100+ rural doctors completed the first stage of the Clinical Teaching and Education Pathway in 2023. The program was recognised with a Dean’s Award for Excellence in Education - Industry and Community Education Programs in 2022.
The Clinical Teaching and Education Pathway will be delivered across Gippsland and Loddon Mallee regions in 2024. Join the waiting list to be notified of future dates.
