Congratulations to Monash University Year 4C medical student James Liang on successfully co-leading the Monash University and Monash International Affairs Society (MIAS) delegation to the National Model United Nations (NMUN) conference in New York City. The delegation was honoured as an Outstanding Delegation at the Conference, placing Monash among the top 5% of all participating teams.
NMUN is the world's largest, most prestigious, most diverse, and oldest ongoing university-level Model UN. The conference offers university students from across the world the opportunity to engage in discussions and debates to propose tangible solutions to the world’s most pressing global issues.
As Head Delegate, James was responsible for the development and delivery of a comprehensive 8-month training program for a delegation of 12 students from across different Monash faculties. Support was provided to the delegates in the lead-up to NMUN through interactive workshops on topics including public speaking, intercultural communication, practical negotiation, policy research, and diplomatic writing.
"Participating in NMUN has been one of the highlights of my university journey. We were able to represent Uganda across various UN committees addressing critical global challenges such as social inclusion of the elderly, protection of children in conflict, and mental health support for refugees. As someone interested in a career in global health, participating in this program provided me with valuable hands-on learning about how diplomacy is put into practice, renewing my appreciation for conflict resolution and collaboration particularly when working within a cross-cultural context", said James.

Students interested in participating in future NMUN conferences are highly encouraged to get involved with future Monash International Affairs Society events and stay engaged with the MIAS on social media.
