Professor Lei Zhang from the School of Translational Medicine and Melbourne Sexual Health Centre has been awarded the 2025 Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering Clunies Ross Technology Innovation Award for his work to develop and commercialise AI-assisted tools for sexually transmitted infections (STI) and cervical cancer screening, which has shaped international health practices.

Professor Zhang was jointly awarded with Professor Andrew Harris from the University of Sydney. The award recognises contributions by dedicated individuals or teams who have shared their vision and knowledge with others to apply technology for the benefit of Australia, and beyond.

Professor Lei Zhang is a global leader in digital health innovation whose pioneering work integrates artificial intelligence, epidemiology, and health economics to transform disease prevention and healthcare delivery. He has developed and commercialised AI-assisted tools for STI and cervical cancer screening, shaped national and international health policies, and established two world-class research centres across Australia and China.

His technologies have improved access to care, informed multi-country strategies, and generated measurable health and economic impact. Through his leadership, Professor Zhang has redefined how science and technology can drive real-world outcomes in public health in Australia and across the Western Pacific.

Professor Zhang said that he was thrilled and honoured to receive the award. “It’s a welcome recognition of our people-oriented AI research, conducted by our team of largely early-career researchers, including postdoctoral fellows, PhD and Master's students,“ he said. “This award wouldn’t be possible without the efforts of my team, as well as the support of my colleagues at the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre.”
