Monash University Professor Yuming Guo has been elected as a fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia (ASSA), recognising his outstanding work in epidemiology, sustainability, and public and planetary health.
Professor Guo is one of 22 researchers newly elected to ASSA fellowship in 2025. Professor Guo’s work in the public health impacts of climate change has gained significant international recognition, having been previously elected Fellow (Member) of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, the Academia Europaea, the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences.
“We are currently experiencing unprecedented environmental changes and these extreme events pose profound challenges to human health, with our research revealing that the health impacts of these environmental extremes are highly unequal,” Professor Guo said.
“People with lower incomes or education levels, those living in remote areas, as well as older adults and children, are disproportionately affected.
“This highlights the need for targeted and context-specific adaptation measures, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.”
In acceptance of the honour, Professor Guo expressed particular pride at how his work has “contributed to advancing sustainable development and protecting public health”.
“I am deeply honored and delighted to be elected as a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia,” added Professor Guo, who also serves as Head of the Monash Climate, Air Quality Research (CARE) Unit.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to all members of our team and collaborators for their selfless dedication and hard work.
“This recognition is not only a personal honor but also an acknowledgment of the collective achievements of our research team, and this honor truly belongs to all of them.”
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Enterprise) and Senior Vice-President Professor Robyn Ward AM said Professor Guo’s election to the Academy was a reflection of his global research impact across more than two decades.
“Being elected as a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia is a prestigious honour. It is a richly deserved achievement for Professor Guo in recognition of his world-leading research in the public health impacts of climate change,” Professor Ward said.
“This is a growing area of research, which is of critical importance to communities around the world. Professor Guo’s leadership continues to be a source of great pride for the entire Monash community.
“I offer my sincerest congratulations to Professor Guo and his team, and to all of this year’s newly elected ASSA fellows.”
ASSA, a peak body for the Social Sciences in Australia, convenes leading experts and researchers from across the country, with a mission to support the advancement, translation and awareness of social science research nationwide.
