Review of ANCA-associated vasculitis published in Nature Reviews Disease Primers

Several diseases cause inflammation of blood vessels that results in damage to vital organs. Antineutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibody (ANCA) associated vasculitis is one of these conditions - and it can be devastating for people with the disease.

In August 2020, a major review covering all aspects of ANCA-associated vasculitis was published in Nature Reviews Disease Primers, an influential journal that invites key researchers to write definitive reviews of important medical problems.

Professor Richard Kitching, Head of Autoimmune Kidney Diseases and Vasculitis Research Group in the Centre for Inflammatory Diseases led a team of international authors as part of the European Union and NHMRC funded RELENT consortium.

The work has quickly had an impact, with one assessment, known as Altmetric, ranking it in the top 10 papers ever published in Nature Reviews Disease Primers.

Professor Kitching said, “There has been a need for a definitive review of ANCA-associated vasculitis to help people better understand, research and treat this condition.”

“Clinicians and researchers alike are interested and passionate about better treatment for this disease, and it is great to see already so much interest and recognition”.

“It was great to work with my international colleagues and patients, as co-authors to write something that should have long term impact on research and treatment.”

The research cements Monash’s international presence in vasculitis – along with high profile discovery research, clinical research, ANZVASC- the multidisciplinary Australian and New Zealand Vasculitis Society established by Prof Kitching and his colleagues, and Monash Health’s dedicated vasculitis clinic.
