$511,000 to support the prevention of acute knee injury
We warmly congratulate Professor David Nikolic-Paterson, awarded a 2021 MRFF (Medical Research Future Fund) Cardiovascular Health Mission grant. His research ‘improving short and long-term outcomes in cardiac bypass surgery by preventing acute knee injury’ has received $511,000.
“The award of this grant is the result of a combined effort by a team of basic scientists, surgeons and nephrologists from Monash Health and Monash University who have come together to address a significant unmet clinical need,” Professor Nikolic-Paterson said.
This project seeks to develop a new pre-clinical animal model to mimic the acute kidney injury which often occurs in high-risk diabetic patients after cardiopulmonary bypass surgery. It seeks to identify the specific mechanisms of cell damage and cell death in the susceptible diabetic kidney when renal blood flow is reduced and to test new therapies to prevent the induction of acute kidney injury.
