Combating Endometriosis related pain with $100K

Congratulations to Dr Thomas Tapmeier of the Uterine Biology and Gynaecological Diseases group at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, who has been awarded a combined $100K from Therapeutic Innovation Australia (TIA) and the Monash Research Impact Fund (MRIF) to develop new antagonists against the Neuropeptide S Receptor 1 (NPSR1).
“I am delighted! This is a wonderful opportunity to drive the search for new and better treatments for endometriosis — and other indications — forward. We are fortunate to have initiatives like TIA and the MRIF here, which enable speedy progress towards translation,” said Dr Tapmeier.
Having identified NPSR1 as a novel, non-hormonal target in endometriosis in collaboration with Bayer AG while at the Nuffield Department of Women’s & Reproductive Health at the University of Oxford, Dr Tapmeier formed a collaboration with Prof Jonathan Baell of the Monash Institute of Pharmacological Sciences (MIPS) to raise funding for medicinal chemistry on antagonists and a screening campaign.
It is hoped that this will lead to new therapeutics against endometriosis-related pain and inflammation.
