Prostate cancer - new research methods win a Fellowship

Congratulations to Dr Pierre-Antoine Dugué awarded the Victorian Cancer Agency Mid-Career Research Fellowship worth $681,808.
The fellowships are part of an $8.5 million plan to fund new ways to detect and treat a host of cancers.
“I am very grateful to be awarded this fellowship and excited to continue this research. In collaboration with colleagues from Cancer Council Victoria, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, and Monash University, we will use genetic and epigenetic markers to better predict prostate cancer outcomes and translate these findings in the clinic,” said Dr Dugué.
It is currently difficult to predict which prostate tumours are likely to progress, which is a considerable challenge for treatment decisions. To improve the subtyping of prostate cancer and prediction of outcomes, Dr Dugué and his team will apply machine learning methods to genome-wide genetic and epigenetic data measured in prostate tumours from Australian men who are part of an extensive epidemiological and clinical research resource. Steps thereafter include validating the findings in additional clinical datasets.
Improving the molecular characterisation of prostate cancer will allow better management of patients at diagnosis and deliver the promise of precision medicine for all men with the disease.
