Just say no to the just in case cannula

Professor Diana Egerton-Warburton
Despite healthcare workers believing that placing a peripheral intravenous cannula (PIVC) is a good thing, only about half of them are used.
Professor Diana Egerton-Warburton, a recent recipient of a $2,890,283.19 MRFF grant is running an implementation science trial with a roadmap for a national roll out.
Diana said “PIVCs are painful to have inserted, take clinicians away from other care, and can have devastating consequences on the health and wellbeing of patients especially in cases of hospital-acquired Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia.”
Then there is the annual cost of PIVC insertion in Australian adult Emergency Department insertions which is estimated at A$594 million with the unused contribution being A$305.9 million and 11,790 clinician days.
Says Diana, “The implementation project will provide immediate and increasing healthcare impacts using a stepped approach in participating health services. This will lead to a compelling policy context and pathway for applicability in a national scale up.”
Best of luck to Diana and her team on this exciting project. We look forward to updates over the next five years.
