Monash University Clinical Trials Centre welcomes partners and industry to networking event
The Monash University Clinical Trial Centre (MUCTC) yesterday hosted its first in-person networking event following its establishment in 2022, offering over 80 key stakeholders the opportunity to meet and be amongst the first to learn about the world-class capabilities, expertise and infrastructure available through the centre.
A diverse representation of the clinical trials sector was in attendance, including researchers, med-tech and pharmaceutical companies, research organisations and government bodies, including the Victorian Government Department of Job, Skills, Industry and Regions and Invest Victoria, and industry and sector partners including mRNA Victoria, Therapeutic Goods Administration, Gilead Sciences, Bristol Myers Squibb and Novo Nordisk.
Professor Christina Mitchell, Dean of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences and Professor Sophia Zoungas, Centre Director opened the event and welcomed guests. Professor Mitchell provided an overview of Monash’s strong track record in clinical trials, the critical nature of partnerships across clinical settings, industry and the community and the opportunities provided by the Centre to develop and test new models of care and treatments, and commercialise new medical products.
Professor Mitchell said that she hoped the event sparked new conversations that progress into partnerships and collaboration in the clinical trial sector. “It’s only in partnership that we can drive change, test and develop new models of care, vaccines, therapeutics and medical devices of the future to improve the human condition,” she said.
Professor Carol Hodgson, Head of Clinical Trials and Cohort Studies in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine then hosted an insightful panel discussion on the design and development of pragmatic clinical trials. Panel members included Professor Steve Webb, Professor of Critical Care Research in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine (SPHPM), Professor Cathy Mihalopoulos, Head of the Monash University Health Economics Group (MUHEG) in SPHPM, Professor Rory Wolfe, Statistical Director of the Monash University Clinical Trials Centre, and Professor Stephen Nicholls, Program Director of the Victorian Heart Hospital.
Professor Zoungas said that the new centre was the “front door” for partners to access Monash’s extensive clinical trial capabilities. “We are world-leading experts in trial design, methodology, conduct and statistical and economic analyses,” she said. “We work collaboratively to bring science, clinical practice and the community together to design and conduct trials with real-world impact, and we tailor our vast list of services and expertise to each trial's unique needs to help deliver the most effective and efficient clinical trials.”
