Research on treatment and control of HIV/STI recognised
L-R: Prof Marcus Chen, Prof Christopher Fairley, Prof Eric Chow, Prof Catriona Bradshaw, A/Prof Jason Ong
Congratulations to the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre researchers Professor Eric Chow, Professor Christopher Fairley, Professor Catriona Bradshaw, Professor Marcus Chen and Associate Professor Jason Ong on winning the 2023 CAPHIA (Council of Academic Public Health Institutions Australasia) Research Excellence Award (Teams category)! They aim to develop novel interventions and strategies to treat and improve the control of HIV/STI and to optimise antimicrobial stewardship to improve the human experience and outcomes of patients.
Research arising from this group has had major impacts on knowledge, clinical practice, public health and health policy, including:
- Developing the first resistance-guided strategy for M. genitalium improving first-line cure from 50% to >90% and changing national/international guidelines.
- Discovering a 70% reduction in oncogenic HPV types in young gay/bisexual men from the Australian gender-neutral HPV vaccination program – potentially leads to reductions in HPV-related cancers.
- Synthesising data by performing high-quality systematic reviews to identify the public health issues, gaps and challenges for HIV/STI prevention and controls, this includes identifying the disparities in HIV/STI prevalence and inadequate access to health services and HIV prevention among international migrants.
Professor Chow said, "This multi-disciplinary team has allowed us to deliver the highest quality evidence-based research, facilitating its translation into clinical practice and guidelines aimed at improving STI control around the world".
