West Gippsland doctor's memory lives on through Tim McArdle Memorial Grant
In a heartwarming event that paid tribute to the memory of the late Dr Tim McArdle, the West Gippsland community came together for the annual Tim McArdle Memorial Grant evening.
The grant, aimed at students interested in rural health and hailing from West Gippsland, was bestowed upon a worthy recipient, James Curtain.
James is a graduate entry 3B Medicine student from Trafalgar. After an early interest in IT and computers and completing a Bachelor of Biomedical Science, James chose to pursue further studies in medicine. While yet to determine his future medical specialty, James is interested in the lifestyle of becoming a rural practitioner and all it has to offer.
“I think scholarships like this are strong indicators of the value that rural healthcare workers can offer, and it would be a privilege if I could be a part of this.”
For James, the grant will provide vital support to enable him to pursue his studies.
“Balancing study with paying for my basic amenities, from internet to rent to food, is a very difficult task – but one that is certainly helped with this scholarship.”
Dr Tim McArdle, an alumnus of Monash University and a beloved GP obstetrician, was a pillar of support for healthcare in Warragul and its surrounding areas. To honour his memory and carry forward his legacy, the Tim McArdle Memorial Grant was established. This bursary provides vital financial assistance to aspiring healthcare professionals with both a passion for rural health and a desire to return to their local region after completing their education.
The requirements for eligibility are straightforward but meaningful. The grant is awarded to West Gippsland applicants who intend to pursue an undergraduate degree at the Monash Faculty of Medicine, and are interested in rural health and returning to work in the local region. The bursary, valued at $4,000, serves as a one-time grant to support the recipient in their pursuit of higher education The Tim McArdle Memorial Grant evening brought together several prominent speakers. Monash Rural Health’s Head of School Professor Shane Bullock, Dr Cleo Sahhar ( Committee Chair of the Tim McArdle Fund), Dr Chris Fogarty (a member of Tim's band and a close friend), and Tim's brother Patrick all took the stage to honour Tim’s legacy and celebrate James’s achievements..
As James embarks on his medical journey, he carries with him the memory of a beloved doctor and the promise of a brighter future for rural healthcare in West Gippsland.
