In Memory of Emeritus Professor Arthur Clark AM, the Foundation Professor of Paediatrics
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Emeritus Professor Arthur Clark AM, the Foundation Professor of Paediatrics at Monash University. Professor Clark’s pioneering work laid the foundations for the Department of Paediatrics and, subsequently, the Monash Children’s Hospital. His legacy continues to influence and inspire the field of child healthcare.
Professor Arthur Clark AM was appointed as the Foundation Professor of Paediatrics at Monash University in 1965. His vision and dedication were instrumental in developing Monash’s world-class children’s services. He made an enormous contribution to the training of several generations of paediatricians, many of whom have established important roles throughout the world.
During Professor Clark’s tenure as the Foundation Professor of Paediatrics, he recognized the need for greater collaboration between paediatrics and other branches of medicine. Thus, he employed a team of specialists and established a dedicated paediatrics department within Queen Victoria Hospital. This hospital was notably one of only three hospitals globally that were founded, managed, and staffed by women, reflecting Clark’s progressive vision for inclusive and comprehensive healthcare.
Under Professor Clark’s leadership, the department made significant strides in paediatric care. His team pioneered research in neonatal breathing, initiated a newborn intensive care unit, and developed a humanist approach to visiting hours and paediatric care. He also founded the Centre for Early Human Development, further cementing his legacy as a trailblazer in child health and development.
Each year, the Monash Medicine, Nursing, and Health Sciences community gathers to honour his contributions through the Arthur Clark Prize in Paediatrics. This award is a testament to his enduring impact, recognizing the best fourth-year student in paediatrics, a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to fostering excellence in the next generation of paediatricians.

Professor Peter Ebeling, AO, Head of the Department of Medicine and the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health, shared his thoughts on Professor Clark’s immense contributions: "Arthur was a visionary in paediatrics. His work laid the foundation for what Monash’s Department of Paediatrics has become today — a beacon of hope and excellence in child health. His commitment to research and to education more broadly as RACP President, transformed the lives of countless children and inspired a generation of healthcare professionals."
Professor Katrina Williams, Head of the Department of Paediatrics, reflected on her personal experience with Professor Clark: "I had the pleasure of meeting Arthur when I started as Professor of Paediatrics at Monash, when Arthur was in his 90s. He immediately impressed as an elder statesman who was, and remained, ahead of his time in education and child health care. His forward-thinking about children with longstanding and complex care needs changed the curriculum and culture at Monash. His willingness to embrace change and enthusiasm to foster the next generation of paediatricians has him aptly remembered with a named best in 4th-year Paediatrics student award."
Professor Clark’s commitment to paediatrics went beyond clinical practice and research. He was a mentor, an innovator, and a dedicated advocate for children’s health. His work has not only saved lives but also shaped the future of paediatric care, ensuring that his impact will be felt for generations to come.
As we mourn the loss of this remarkable man, we also celebrate his extraordinary life and legacy. Professor Arthur Clark’s contributions to paediatrics will continue to inspire and guide us. His spirit of innovation and dedication to children’s health will forever remain at the heart of Monash’s Department of Paediatrics.
